FAMOUS & FAMILIAR VERSES (#2): 'Take the World as It is' Poem by Charles Swain

This meme is to celebrate poetry, famous and familiar verses.  If you'd like to join us, get the logo, post your own discussion of your famous and familiar verse and link back so that we may all see the kinds of poetry you love and celebrate.

This poem comes as a result of an event that happened in the family.  I feel like when life throws you a curve ball, you're left to just take life as it is.  This poem exemplifies exactly that.

I have started my Famous and Familiar Verses series with poems from a book I have had on my shelf a long time and also a book which has actually inspired this series, A Treasury of Poems: A Collection of the World's Most Famous and Familiar Verses. (Tell us what source you're getting your poem from).

Just as I will be doing when I discuss my famous and familiar verses, tell us the following:  The Title of the Poem (perhaps with a possible link available online so that we can also read the poem); What the Poem is about; Why You Love the Poem, and Tell us a Little bit about the Poet.

Take the World as It is Poem by Charles Swain is available at Old Poetry and I'd like you all to read it.

This poem tells us that if we force ourselves to change what is we're bound to end up in a bad world.  'If the surface be shinning, Ne'er rake up the sediment hidden below!'  This is exactly what happened to a family member of mine.  After receiving some great news, she really went the distance to 'rake the sediment hidden below' and found herself in a really bad world.  I know it's vague... but it's the truth... and those of you who will experience it sooner or later and remember the words of Charles Swain.
Just take the world as it is... celebrate the good, and accept even the small shortcomings... Enjoy the smiles, and even the sorrows.  Learn to enjoy the love and friendships, as well as the deceit and hard truth of life.  Learn to take the world as it is.  Don't push your luck, as the saying goes.
The most wisdom lies in the poem's last two lines..

"In the worst there's some spark of a nature divine,
And the wisest and best take the world as it is."

Charles Swain
-from "A Treasury of Poems" by Sarah Anne Stuart

Charles Swain is an English Poet who was very well known for his literary pursuits.  He published a variety of manuals in different magazines and newspapers.  While he's poetry isn't fully known by many, or maybe even forgotten, he's truly one of my favorite poets now.
