Crash Guide to Book Blogging: Advanced Reader's Copies (ARCs), Advanced Review Copies, and Uncorrected (Galley) Proofs

What ARC copies? What is the difference between Advanced Reader Copies and Advanced Review Copies?  What about Galley (uncorrected) proofs? When do ARCs become available? And who do they become available to?  How can you get an ARC copy?  And best of all, other sources that cover this subject in even more detail than I will go into.

And what is the difference between ARCs, Advanced Review Copies, and Uncorrected (Galley) Proofs?

ARCs or Advanced Reader's Copies are the pre-publication copies of a book.  They are often prepared closed to the finished product that will ultimately be published for distribution.  Advanced Review Copies, on the other hand, are an actual copy of the book from the first printing.  These are often distributed  a bit of time before the time of purchase along with some complementary material (ie. photo of the author or praise from editor and/or publisher).  Additionally, Uncorrected or Galley Proofs are usually books printed for in-house editing purposes, but are sometimes sent out like ARCs.  A good source to see on this subject is Between The Covers.

And Who Are They Given To?

Roughly three to six months before a book is supposed to be published, publishers will print any of the three above to be sent out as a marketing tool for publicity and reviews.  Usually, they go to reviewers, booksellers, journalists, magazines, etc.

There are a lot of ways to get ARCs.  If you work at an independent book store, you'll often have access to them.  Having a review website (with a review policy) will give you opportunities for offers.  I have even read in a few places that you can buy them off Amazon.  Become part of Blog Tours as they will provide many of them.  Sign up for Reviewer Programs or Subscribe to Publisher's Newsletters as many also become available in this way.  A good couple of sources to get the direct links to some of these sites are available at: Small Reviews ; Parajunkee's View ; and The Story Siren.

What to DO with ARCs?
When Should You Publish You ARC Reviews?

ARCs should be reviewed near or as close as possible to the release dates.  I have read around that it's usually optimal to publish a review of an ARC about a week or so before the publishing date.  It's usually better sooner than later, later is up for grabs.  Once the book is published, an ARC may still be reviewed, but it's usually preferred before the releases dates.  Once the ARC is review, it should not be sold, it is not for sale.  It may be passed on for review to another blogger or kept on your book shelves.

I hope this quick guide to ARCs helps everyone in some way or another.
