Let him tell you his story in his own words.
SOX is an American Quarter Horse, born with a brave heart and an in your
face attitude. He was also born with a leg that was not quite right. His courage
and his disregard for his handicap inspire his little friend Emma.
Emma too has a challenge to over come. She struggles with a learning
disability. She befriends Sox and an unbreakable bond is formed.
When Emma is plucked up and swept away by a fierce storm, Sox leads
the rescue party. Will he be able to fill in for Emma's little mare that was
injured by the storm? (GoodReads)
I felt like I needed to read this book because I, myself, have had a fascination with horses all my life. Horses and dolphins, in fact, but that's another story. Horses are very special animals in so many ways. This book really reveals that. And what's more special about a book like this is showing how much we, as human beings, can learn from horses about ourselves as much as about them.
One of my favorite books while growing up was Black Beauty. In fact, it's one of the books on my reading list for The Books that made me Love Reading Challenge by Emlyn Chand. I will be doing a review on that book very soon for that challenge, but for now I want to say that this book reminded me a lot of that book. Backyard Horse Tales definitely has a reminiscent tone to that of Black Beauty.
If you are an animal lover, you will especially love this book. The biggest focus in it is the bond between Emma and the horse. A story of the human will. A narrative of trust and determination. A story of utterly beautiful journey of faith. A unique bond between a young girl and a beautiful horse.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves horses, anyone who is interested in knowing about the bonds between special animals and human beings, and absolutely anyone who is curious to learn more about the human spirit through the bond of an animal. It's a very short read, definitely worth your time in more than one way.
