ReView of FARSIGHTED by Emlyn Chand

Alex Kosmitoras has been born with what seems at first to be a misfortune in his life.  Being blind seems to be a burden. He feels he is forced to rely on his parents for everything his entire life.  He deals with THE bully of the school on a constant basis.  On top of everything, he doesn't even have any friends.  The journey in this books is to tell his transition into a more purposeful vocation - to see the past, the present, and even the future.  He is NOT blind, he IS a psychic.  His powers stem from a familial gift passed on from his father's side... and the story grows even more mysterious when neighbors decided to move next door to his mother's flower shop, when he first builds a friendship to an Indian classmate in his Advanced Chemistry class, a girl named Shapri, and furthermore when he meets Simmi.  You will not want to put this book down as the story and elements of his life unfold to give rise to his true calling.

There are so many things you'll find yourself loving about this book.  There will be the point in the book when Alex bonds with Shapri, and it will give you goosebumps.  The moments between Alex and Simmi will grip you glued to the book.  His struggle in being impaired and feeling as though he cannot partake in social and school activities because he had been constantly been appointed a guardian to watch his every move.  The duality of his character in whether he will choose to face his gifts or run away from them will really touch you.  You'll feel a lot of empathy for him in many ways.  How many of us haven't felt we are gifted, but somehow we refuse to acknowledge that can really be the case, whether it is when we were younger or now later in life?  The inclusion of Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, and The Crucible are another layer of depth to this piece of young adult fiction.  You'll find there are many instance where you'll feel as though there is a lot of depth to this book, especially when you find Alex so inquisitive about his life.  He is not a passive young individual, and he's willing to ask questions of his surroundings and of the people around him.

This book is a really easy read, but that is not to say that it is simple.  It is very concise and straight to the gut of things.  It doesn't beat around the bush, but it also doesn't omit very important elements to driving the point home.  It is a very worth-while read, especially because you will find yourself at the end of the book being thankful you stuck around to find out how it all turns out and that, in fact, it ends slightly different than you would have anticipated it.
