"After seventeen-year-old Felicita’s dearest friend, Ilven, kills herself to escape an arranged marriage, Felicita chooses freedom over privilege. She fakes her own death and leaves her sheltered life as one of Pelimburg’s magical elite behind. Living in the slums, scrubbing dishes for a living, she falls for charismatic Dash while also becoming fascinated with vampire Jannik. Then something shocking washes up on the beach: Ilven's death has called out of the sea a dangerous, wild magic. Felicita must decide whether her loyalties lie with the family she abandoned . . . or with those who would twist this dark power to destroy Pelimburg's caste system, and the whole city along with it. "
This book is a combination of YA, Fantasy, Paranormal, and maybe a little bit Science Fiction. Unfortunately, for me, this book was extremely dry. I could barely get through it. The writing first and foremost will exhaust you. It's not necessarily an easy read. I think it's meant to be a more intelligent young adult book, but it falls short in an inexplicable way. I appreciate its attempt to be more sofisticated, but it simply doesn't quite work out. Then, the most exciting part is the beginning and the very end. The middle is just a sequence of events that didn't really keep me gripped at the edge of my seat. More so, it made me turn the pages faster. Yawn, turn page. Yawn, turn page, turn page.... etc.
I have read some really good reviews of this book. I bought this book on the impression that it was a really great young adult new release. I really began this book having the impression that it would really blow me away. Saddly, though, it failed on multiple accounts. Nevertheless, it was still an O.K. read. Some people like this book more than I did. Don't be discouraged to read this book. It might surprise you for the better more than it did me. You might like this book, after all, if:
- you like a book with a lot of mystery, a book with a slow build-up, and a story that gives you a world a that isn't at first easily deduced, or laid out completely
- if you are into fantasy books about magic, and vampires
- if you're willing to read about the story of a young girl who's trying to escape an arranged marriage and the confines of her mother's prison
Definitely, NOT my kind of YA book. It is possible, though, that some of you will like it more than I did.
